Papa John's International, Inc. ranks as the third largest pizza chain in the United States, trailing only Pizza Hut (a division of YUM! Brands, Inc.) and Domino's, Inc. The company has built a chain of more than 2,800 pizza delivery and carry-out restaurants operating under the trademark "Papa John's" in 49 states, the District of Columbia, and 20 international markets. Approximately 570 of the outlets are company owned, with the remainder being franchised. The firm also franchises about 115 Perfect Pizza restaurants in the United Kingdom. After the opening of its first store in 1985, Papa John's grew rapidly through the late 1990s before settling in as a more mature company in the following decade. In a highly competitive segment of the restaurant industry, Papa John's has managed to carve out a highly profitable niche by offering a very limited menu consisting of pizza, breadsticks, cheese sticks, chicken strips, chicken wings, and canned or bottled soft drinks; and by using high-quality ingredients and touting them in its trademark slogan "Better Ingredients. Better Pizza."

Papa John's Copycat Recipe

Pizza Dough
1 tablespoon of melted butter
lots of cinnamon
1/2 cup + 1/3 cup of flour
1/2 cup of white sugar
1/3 cup of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of shortening
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
3 tablespoons of milk
3/4 teaspoon of vanilla

Roll out the pizza dough on a pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Perforate pizza dough with the dough. Brush melted butter over the pizza dough and completely cover the dough with cinnamon. (If you like less cinnamon you don't have to go as crazy with it). Prepare the topping by mixing all the ingredients using a fork. Sprinkle all over the cinnamon dough. Pop into the oven at 460 degrees for 10-12 minutes. While pizza is cooking, make the icing. Mix all the ingredients together. If the icing is too thick, add extra milk. When pizza is done, drizzle icing all over the pizza.

Chicken Club Pizza

Papa Johns Copycat Recipe

1/3 - 1/2 cup Papa John's Pizza Sauce (see sidebar for recipe)
1 cup grilled chicken breast, chopped (or rotisserie chicken breast)
1/2 cup crumbled bacon
1/2 cup ham, chopped
1/2 cup diced tomatoes
2 mushrooms, sliced
2 cups Mozzarella cheese

Spread sauce on semi-baked pizza dough. In a bowl toss all topping ingredients together and sprinkle evenly on top of pizza crust. Bake on a pizza stone (if you have one) at 450 degrees  until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown, 8-10 minutes, maybe more.

Cheese Sticks

Papa John's Copycat Recipe

1/2 lb pizza dough
2 tablespoons salted butter, softened
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 lb grated Mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 500 degrees with a pizza stone inside. If you don’t have a pizza stone, use an upside down cookie sheet. Mix butter and garlic in a small bowl and set aside.

Spread pizza dough out into a 12-inch circle on parchment paper. (This makes it easier to transfer the dough to the pizza stone.) Spread the butter and garlic mixture over dough and top with parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. Transfer the dough to the preheated stone or pan. Bake 9-10 minutes or until bubbly and golden. Remove from oven and cool 1-2 minutes before cutting. Serve hot, with marinara.
